About Fowey

Fowey sits at the mouth of the River Fowey in south Cornwall, a port town and civil parish whose sheltered estuary has steered its fortunes for centuries. The local church was first established in the 7th century, and the settlement existed well before the Norman invasion, growing around a natural harbour that made Fowey an important trading centre. Privateers once used the same sheltering waters, adding a ripple of maritime intrigue to its history. In more recent industrial times the Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway brought China clay here for export, a reminder of the town’s enduring links with sea-borne commerce. Today Fowey retains a strong sense of place, a compact parish (postcode PL23) in the county of Cornwall in the South West of England, where history and harbour-side life meet. At the 2021 census the parish population was 2,244. Whether you come for the history or the harbour-side atmosphere, Fowey offers a concentrated taste of Cornwall’s coastal past.

One of the most scenic estuaries in England, the Fowey has inspired writers from Kenneth Grahame to Daphne du Maurier. The river winds through steep wooded valleys to the sea at the medieval town of Fowey, and a network of ferries, footpaths and woodland trails connects the communities on both banks. The Hall Walk — a circular route combining ferry crossings and cliff paths — is one of Cornwall's great short walks.

Readymoney Cove is a memorable stretch of Cornwall coast near Polruan, known for its sand, Atlantic light and easy access to the sea. Depending on the tide and weather, it can feel either wild and dramatic or calm enough for a slower beach day, with coastal paths and cliff views adding to the appeal.

A small blockhouse built by Henry VIII to defend the mouth of Fowey harbour, St Catherine's Castle stands on a wooded headland above Readymoney Cove. Though never tested in battle, it retains its original form remarkably well. The wooded path down from Fowey through Hall Walk to the castle, with views across the estuary, is one of the loveliest short walks in south Cornwall.
