About Gweek

Gweek is a small Cornish village and civil parish about three miles (5 km) east of Helston. Formed in 1986 from part of Constantine, its name was first recorded as Gwyk in 1358 and comes from the Cornish gwig, meaning “forest village,” related to Welsh gwig and Old Breton guic. Today Gweek retains a compact, friendly feel: a local pub, the Black Swan, and a village shop offer simple comforts, while the Cornish Seal Sanctuary provides a unique and heartening destination within the community. The layers of history and language sit lightly alongside everyday life, making Gweek a place where a short visit can feel both restorative and quietly memorable. Whether you pause for a drink at the pub, pick up provisions at the shop, or visit the sanctuary, the village’s gentle character and its Cornish roots are never far from view.
