About Gwithian

Gwithian sits on the Cornish coast in west Cornwall, a small village now within the parish of Gwinear-Gwithian. It lies three miles northeast of Hayle and four miles east of St Ives, across St Ives Bay, placing it within easy reach of two well‑known neighbours while retaining a distinct, seaside identity. Once a civil parish in its own right, Gwithian recorded a population of 634 in 1931. On 1 April 1934 the parish was abolished to form "Gwinear Gwithian", and the village has since been part of that combined parish. Located in the Cornwall district, county of Cornwall, and the South West region, Gwithian carries the TR27 postcode. Visitors and readers alike can appreciate its quietly historic status as a coastal settlement in west Cornwall, where administrative shifts have shaped its modern governance but not its character as a village by the sea.

The white tower of Godrevy Lighthouse, said to have inspired Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, stands on an island just offshore from one of north Cornwall's finest beaches. Grey seals haul out on the rocks below the headland, and the beach itself — managed by the National Trust — stretches south to Gwithian with magnificent views of St Ives Bay.
