About Kerris

Tucked into west Cornwall, Kerris is a quietly evocative settlement with a simple, appealing identity. Just three miles (5 km) south‑west of Penzance and set within the civil parish of Paul, it offers the kind of modest Cornish charm that rewards a slow arrival. The name itself — Kerris, meaning "fort‑place" in the Cornish language — hints at a long, layered landscape and a connection to the region’s linguistic heritage. Close enough to Penzance to feel linked to its coastal energies, yet distinct in its calm, Kerris invites exploration of the surrounding countryside and an appreciation for small‑scale Cornish settlements. There’s a sense of rootedness here: a place whose name carries history and whose location speaks of proximity to the sea and to community life in Paul. For those tracing Cornish place‑names or seeking a quiet corner of west Cornwall to ponder, Kerris offers a compact, resonant stop on any itinerary of the far South West.

A distinguished Bronze Age stone circle south-west of St Buryan, Boscawen-Un has nineteen outer stones and a leaning central pillar of white quartz that makes it instantly distinctive. It was here that the first recorded Gorsedh Kernow — the gathering of Cornish bards — was held in 1928, restoring a tradition that had lapsed for centuries.

The most complete and perfectly circular Bronze Age stone circle in Cornwall, the Merry Maidens stands in a field south of St Buryan with all nineteen stones upright. Local legend holds the stones are girls turned to granite for dancing on the Sabbath. The two outlying standing stones known as The Pipers — the musicians — stand in adjacent fields.
