About Lipson
Lipson is a suburban ward of the city of Plymouth (PL4) in England’s South West. At first glance it feels quietly residential: a patchwork of mixed terraced housing, some properties subdivided into bedsits and flats, lending the area a lived-in, layered character. The heart of the neighbourhood is Freedom Fields, a generous public open space with a stirring past. Long before it became a park it witnessed conflict; during the Civil War the townsfolk of nearby Plymouth used the fields to resist substantial Cavalier raiding parties, an effort that helped the town sustain the royalist siege. The name Freedom Fields predates that conflict too, acquired after the defeat there of a French invasion force two hundred years earlier. Today the green is both a historic site and a community asset, its name carrying echoes of those dramatic moments. It even inspired the title of local folk singer-songwriter Seth Lakeman’s third album. For visitors and residents alike, Lipson offers a quietly evocative corner of Plymouth, where ordinary streets lead to extraordinary history.
