About Mary Tavy
Nestled four miles north of Tavistock in West Devon, Mary Tavy is a compact village of around 600 people that sits within the wild sweep of Dartmoor National Park. Named for the River Tavy, the village belies its size with a dramatic industrial past: it was once home to Wheal Friendship, at one time the world’s largest copper mine, and was surrounded by lead and tin workings. An electoral ward of the same name recorded a population of 1,559 at the 2011 census, hinting at the broader community that shares the valley and moorland.
A mile or two north lies Peter Tavy; both settlements were recorded separately in the Domesday Book of 1086, a reminder of how long people have shaped this landscape. Today Mary Tavy offers visitors a quiet, history-steeped stop amid river, moor and mining memory — a place where pastoral lanes and centuries of industry sit side by side, inviting exploration and reflection.
