About Merther
Merther is a small Cornish hamlet with a quietly storied past. Once a separate civil parish, it now belongs to the parish of St Michael Penkevil in the Cornwall district and ceremonial county of Cornwall, England. Set just 2 miles (3 km) east of Truro on the eastern bank of the Tresillian River, Merther retains the sense of a place shaped by its church and manor. In 1931 the parish recorded a population of 150, and the hamlet was formerly the churchtown of the small parish of Merther. It was also the site of a manor house and a medieval chapel dedicated to St Cohan. Today the former parish church stands in ruins, a poignant reminder of the village's medieval and ecclesiastical heritage. For visitors who delight in quiet pockets of history, Merther offers a compact glimpse into Cornwall’s past: riverside setting, echoes of a manor and chapel, and the atmospheric presence of a ruined church that marks the long arc of community life here.
