About Porthoustock
Porthoustock is a hamlet near St Keverne in Cornwall, England, on the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula. Aggregates are quarried nearby, and the beach is dominated by a large concrete stone silo that was once used to store stone ready to load ships but is now disused. Along the southern edge of the pebble beach a pier allows coastal trading ships of up to 82 metres to dock and be loaded with stone, while fishing boats operate from the shore. Lobster and crab potting, net fishing and hand lines are the principal fishing methods seen here, keeping a working maritime character to the place. The South West Coast Path passes through Porthoustock, providing a clear route along the coast and a chance to pass the remnants of its industrial past alongside everyday fishing activity. The combination of quarrying, the hulking silhouette of the abandoned silo and the steady comings and goings of small boats gives Porthoustock a distinctive, unvarnished presence on the Lizard Peninsula.
