About Riverside
Saltash Passage sits on the Devon bank of the River Tamar, directly opposite Saltash in Cornwall, and forms part of the St Budeaux area of Plymouth. Tucked at the northern end of Wolseley Road—once known as Ferry Road—the spot still carries echoes of its past: the nearby railway stop is still called Ferry Road Station. The name Saltash Passage itself recalls the long-running ferry route that carried passengers and vehicles across the Tamar between Saltash and Plymouth until the arrival of the Tamar Bridge in 1961 made the service uneconomic. Today the place retains a quiet, riverside charm and has long been a popular leisure destination for locals. It’s a small but evocative slice of Plymouth’s riverside history where old names and modern landmarks sit side by side, inviting a stroll along the water and a moment to imagine the ferries that once plied this crossing.
