About Durgan

Tucked beside the Helford River, Durgan is a tiny hamlet in the parish of Mawnan, four miles south of Falmouth in south Cornwall. With just fifteen residential properties—seven owned by the National Trust—and a permanent population of nine (2024), it retains an intimate, unhurried character. The majority of homes are second residences or holiday lets, and the hamlet’s mood shifts with the comings and goings of visitors. Durgan’s beach is a particular draw, popular with boaters, swimmers and holidaymakers who come for its simple pleasures and waterside setting. Vehicular access is restricted: only residents or those staying in holiday lets may drive into the village. The lanes are narrow and parking is unavailable, a practical rule that also helps maintain the settlement’s tranquil atmosphere. Small and quietly managed, Durgan offers a restful corner of the Cornish coast where National Trust stewardship and a handful of homes combine to create a place that feels carefully preserved rather than crowded—a gentle retreat beside the river.

Attractions

A valley garden descending to the hamlet of Durgan on the Helford River, Glendurgan was created by the Quaker Fox family in the 1820s. The famous laurel maze — one of the oldest in England — sits at the heart of the garden, surrounded by champion trees and exotic plantings that exploit the sheltered south-facing valley to extraordinary effect.

Helford Passage is one of those Cornish places that works both as a base and as an attraction in its own right, with enough character to justify a detour near Durgan. Harbour life, local food, sea air and the surrounding walks usually matter as much as any single sight.
