About Lelant

Lelant, or Uny Lelant, is a village in the civil parish of St Ives in west Cornwall, England. Tucked on the west side of the Hayle Estuary, it sits about 2½ miles (4.0 km) southeast of St Ives and one mile (1.6 km) west of Hayle. With a population of 3,892 at the 2011 census, Lelant occupies a quietly distinctive spot in the TR26 postcode of Cornwall, in the South West region. Administratively it forms part of the Lelant and Carbis Bay ward on Cornwall Council and lies within the St Ives Parliamentary constituency; births, marriages and deaths are registered in the Penzance district. The village’s estuary-side location is threaded by the South West Coast Path — the long-distance route that follows the coast of south west England from Somerset to Dorset — which passes through Lelant along the estuary. Close to the well-known towns of St Ives and Hayle, Lelant provides a compact, coastal base framed by the sweep of the estuary and the wider Cornish coastline.

The ancient church of St Uny at Lelant occupies a spectacular position above the Hayle estuary on what was once the main western approach to Cornwall by sea. The churchyard's sand-blown setting, overlooking the estuary and Godrevy lighthouse, is among the most atmospheric in Cornwall. The church contains Norman elements and medieval bench ends of considerable quality.
