About Prince Rock
St Mary's Church was a Church of England church in Cattedown, Plymouth, Devon. Built between 1911 and 1912 to the designs of Sir Charles Nicholson, it served as a place of worship until closing in 1956. After closure the building was largely used for storage, though from 1990 it also partly served as a church hall and community centre. These later chapters gave the church a practical, communal role even after regular services had ceased. The building’s existence, from its early-20th-century creation to its varied afterlife, traces a quiet narrative of change in Cattedown. Ultimately the church was demolished in 2007–08, closing that chapter of local history. Its story — of design, service, adaptation and eventual removal — offers a concise, poignant glimpse into how buildings evolve with the needs of their neighbourhood.
