About Laira
Laira is a suburban area of the City of Plymouth in the South West, within postcode district PL3. Its identity is bound to the River Plym: the name was originally given to that part of the estuary from the Cattewater up to Marsh Mills in Plymouth, Devon, England. Over the centuries the place has appeared under several guises on old maps and documents — Lare (1591), Lary poynte (1638), the Leerie (1643) and the Lairy (1802) — each echoing a long relationship with the tide and the river. The name itself may come from a Brythonic word corresponding to the Welsh llaeru, meaning ‘to ebb’, a reminder of the ebb and flow that shaped the land. Today Laira’s story reads like a short seafaring tale: a suburban neighbourhood whose roots are written in its estuarine past and in the shifting names recorded through time. For the curious visitor or thoughtful walker, Laira offers a clear sense of place born of water and language.
